Why Your Wellness Routine Should Change as You Get Older

At Natural Health Care Services, Gregg and Karen have spent more than 30 years helping people throughout Freeport and Western Pennsylvania. We offer chiropractic care, nutritional guidance, and natural and holistic therapies.

Over the years, our work has included everything from chiropractic care and hands-on therapies to nutrition, colon hydrotherapy and exercise and rehabilitation programs. Having different options available is important because we’ve learned that what works well for one person may not make sense for the next.

Over the decades, we have learned that what works well for one person may not make sense for the next.

We have worked with people at just about every stage of adult life. After doing this for more than three decades, you really start to notice how much a person’s needs can change.

Someone might tell us they are still eating the same way they did 15 years ago. They are doing the same workouts or taking the same supplements. Their routine hasn’t changed, but they notice they don’t feel quite the same.

That is completely normal. Your life at 55 probably doesn’t look exactly like it did at 35. The way you take care of yourself doesn’t have to look the same, either.

We Tend to Stick With What We Know

Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about routines that seem to be working. Maybe you’ve taken the same vitamins for years. You buy the same groceries every week. You have settled into habits that are comfortable and familiar.

There’s nothing wrong with that! But every so often, it’s worth looking at those habits again.

A lot can change over 10 or 20 years. Maybe you have a different job now and spend more time sitting. Maybe you are sleeping differently. Or maybe you finally have more time to walk, golf, garden, or travel. Your routine should make sense for the life you are living right now.

What Do You Want to Keep Doing?

When people are younger, health goals often revolve around losing weight or getting stronger. Later on, the goals tend to become more practical.

You want to keep working around the house without thinking twice about it. You want to travel, golf, garden, or keep up with your grandchildren.

We’ve heard plenty of variations of the same thing over the years: “I just want to keep doing what I enjoy.”

That’s the perfect place to start. Instead of comparing what you can do today with what you did decades ago, think about what you want to continue doing in the years ahead.

Taking Another Look at Nutrition

Eating habits have a way of becoming automatic. We find foods we like, get into a routine, and stick with it. Years can go by without giving much thought to whether those choices still fit our bodies.

Nutrition has long been part of our work. Karen’s background includes nutrition and herbal health. We offer personalized guidance alongside other wellness options.

That doesn’t mean we tell everyone to completely change how they eat or send them home with a cabinet full of supplements. We want to find out what you are already doing first. Sometimes there are things that make sense to keep, and other times there are a few areas worth tweaking.

Exercise Changes, Too

It is easy to use a younger version of yourself as a measuring stick. You remember when you could run several miles or spend a whole weekend working in the yard without feeling sore on Monday.

You don’t have to hold yourself to that old standard. Staying active means different things at different points in your life.

For many of our neighbors in Western PA, the priority shifts to maintaining mobility and range of motion. We often see folks who just want to bend down comfortably to weed the garden or lift a grandkid without a back spasm.

Our goal isn’t to try to make someone 30 again. It’s to work with where you are today. We offer rehabilitation, exercise programs, and neuromuscular work to help keep you moving comfortably.

Looking at the Whole Picture

There isn’t one health answer that fits everybody. That is why we offer different types of care under one roof.

Gregg has decades of experience in chiropractic care, working with both the spine and joints. Karen brings her experience in nutrition, herbal health, reflexology, and colon hydrotherapy. We also offer several hands-on therapies that can be considered depending on what someone needs.

But nobody needs to walk through our door already knowing exactly which service they need. Usually, the first thing we do is listen.

What’s been going on? Has something changed? What are you currently doing, and what would you like to keep doing? That gives us the best place to start.

Your Friend’s Routine Doesn’t Have to Be Yours

It’s hard to go very long without hearing about a new health trend. A friend starts taking a new supplement. A family member tries a trendy diet. You open social media and see a complicated morning routine.

Some of those ideas might be great, but that doesn’t mean they belong in your life.

Two people can be the exact same age and live completely different lives. One may be on their feet all day while the other sits behind a desk. Age matters, but it’s certainly not the only thing that matters.

Take Another Look Every Once in a While

You don’t need to reinvent your lifestyle every few years. But you also don’t have to keep doing something simply because you’ve done it forever.

Think about how your life looks today compared with five or ten years ago. Maybe your schedule changed. Maybe your priorities changed. Your wellness routine can change right along with them.

At Natural Health Care Services, we take the time to get to know you, what you’re currently doing, and what you’d like to accomplish. From there, we can talk about what makes sense for your unique body.
