Spinal manipulation/mobilization (SMT) is a type of manual therapy that involves using hands-on techniques to move the joints of the spine. It is used to treat a variety of conditions, including back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint pain.
There are two main types of SMT: manipulation and mobilization. Manipulation involves applying a quick, thrusting force to a joint to move it beyond its normal range of motion. Mobilization involves applying a gentler, sustained force to a joint to move it within its normal range of motion.
SMT is thought to work by a variety of mechanisms, including:
Spinal manipulation/mobilization is generally considered to be a safe and effective treatment for a variety of conditions. However, it is important to note that it is not right for everyone. People with certain medical conditions, such as osteoporosis or spinal instability, should not have SMT.
Detailed description of the procedure:
SMT is typically performed by a chiropractor or other healthcare professional who has been trained in the technique. During a SMT session, the patient will lie on their stomach, back, or side, depending on the area of the spine being treated. The healthcare professional will then use their hands to apply a quick, thrusting force or a gentler, sustained force to the affected joints.
The patient may feel a popping or clicking sensation during the procedure. This is normal and is caused by the release of gas bubbles from the joints. The patient may also feel some soreness or discomfort after the procedure, but this should subside within a few days.
Benefits of spinal manipulation/mobilization:
SMT has been shown to be effective for a variety of conditions, including:
SMT can also help to improve range of motion, flexibility, and posture.
Risks of spinal manipulation/mobilization:
SMT is generally considered to be a safe and effective treatment for a variety of conditions. However, there is a small risk of serious complications, such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and disc herniation.
Who should not have spinal manipulation/mobilization:
SMT is not right for everyone. People with certain medical conditions, such as osteoporosis, spinal instability, or rheumatoid arthritis, should not have SMT. Additionally, pregnant women and people with a history of stroke should not have SMT without first talking to their doctor.
If you are considering spinal manipulation/mobilization, be sure to talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits.
